How to Put on Your Bra (and Master the Scoop & Swoop)

Putting on your bra might seem simple, but doing it correctly makes a huge difference in comfort, support, and the overall fit. Proper technique (including scoop-and-swoop!) ensures your bras last longer, your breasts are fully supported, and you feel confident all day. One essential method for bra fitting is the scoop-and-swoop, which positions your breast tissue fully into the cups.
How to put on your bra
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get the perfect fit every time.
Step 1: Get the Shoulder Straps in Place
Start by putting on your bra with the shoulder straps on. Make sure the straps are untwisted and sit comfortably on your shoulders. Remember, the band does most of the support, not the straps, so don’t over-tighten them.
Step 2: Lean Forward and Position the Band
Lean forward so your breasts naturally fall into the centre of the cups. Reach behind to fasten the hooks on the band, starting with the loosest set of hooks. Ensure the band sits snugly around your ribcage and doesn’t ride up. This step is crucial for achieving proper bra support.
Step 3: Adjust Yourself into the Cups
Use your hands to scoop breast tissue from the sides and underneath into the cups. Centre your nipples in the cups and make sure all breast tissue is positioned comfortably. Breast tissue should not be behind the wire on the side, or slipping through the bottom of the cup. The breast should be lifted entirely into the cup, and not laying against the torso. This is the heart of the scoop-and-swoop technique and the key to a great bra fit.
Step 4: Smooth and Finalize
Finally, smooth out any tissue that might be overscooped at the centre front, and straighten the cups and straps so everything sits comfortably. The underwire on a wired bra, should be right up underneath your breast, along the breast root, or inframammary fold. Check for spillage, gaping, or discomfort, and remember that a properly fitted bra should feel supportive without digging in anywhere.
Tips for a Better Fit
Always fasten on the loosest hooks when your bra is new; tighten as the band stretches over time.
Perform the scoop-and-swoop each time you put on a bra to maintain support and shape.
If you notice constant slipping straps or back riding, your band size may need adjustment, or it's time to move to the middle or tightest hook.
